Slow pace more advisable in Catalonia

In a surprise move shortly before the deadline expired on Sunday the Catalan regional parliament elected the separatist Carles Puigdemont as president of the autonomous community. Puigdemont, until now mayor of Girona, pledged to secure Catalonia's secession from Spain within the next 18 months. The conservative Catalan daily La Vanguardia warns against rash action: "The Duke of Norfolk advised the Duke of Buckingham in Shakespeare's Henry VIII: 'To climb steep hills requires slow pace at first.' Carles Puigdemont spoke in his inaugural address of a mandate of 18 months for the transition from post-autonomy to pre-independence. However that path is by no means an easy walk up a hill but rather the dangerous ascent of a steep peak. One would do well to heed the Duke of Norfolk's advice: calm, without haste and careful steps."
