Deutsche Bank must save country's image

Deutsche Bank plans to axe 9,000 jobs in reaction to record losses of six billion euros in the third quarter, it announced on Thursday. The image of the German economy is starting to lose its shine, the conservative daily La Vanguardia comments: "Following hot on the heels of the Volkswagen scandal, the problems at Deutsche Bank come as another big blow to the traditional image of German efficiency. … The efforts to turn Deutsche Bank into a serious, disciplined and profitable entity capable of regaining prestige and trust are vital both for the bank, which is one of Europe's largest, and for Germany's own image. But this will be a lengthy, difficult and expensive task since the bank isn't expected to move into profit once more until 2018, among other things because it will have to pay severance to the employees it dismisses. Much depends on how successful the bank's new managers are."
