Alves turns bananas into symbol against racism

Dani Alves, who plays as an offensive right back for the Spanish football club FC Barcelona, ate a banana that a fan of the opposing team FC Villareal had thrown at him during a game last Sunday. The conservative daily La Vanguardia praises the Brazilian for his courageous act against racism: "His gesture triggered a chain reaction of declarations of solidarity on the social networks and turned the aggressor's attempt at abuse into the contrary. Alves' banana has thus become a symbol of solidarity with the fight against racism and a rejection of any claims of superiority based on the fortuity of belonging to a certain nationality, culture or social class."
