No to immigration would be costly for Swiss

Switzerland will vote on Sunday on measures to limit immigration which would contravene its freedom of movement agreement with the EU. From an economic point of view the country can't afford such a move, the liberal-conservative daily Die Presse points out: "For Switzerland, economic exchange with the EU member states is crucial: a third of its jobs depend on it, and the trade volume amounts to an impressive 700 million euros per day. The low level of unemployment, currently just over three percent, would soar in no time if access to the EU's single market was limited. ... The government, parliamentary majority and the trade associations are against this for good reasons. The people of Switzerland should also take this view and vote against the initiative on Sunday. Otherwise the EU would have every reason to make good on its threat and also cancel other bilateral trade agreements."
