Dutch populism loses its innocence

With his PVV party the Dutch right-wing populist Geert Wilders and wants to form a strategic alliance with Marine Le Pen in France and Filip Dewinter in Flanders. Right-wing populism in the Netherlands has lost its innocence with this plan, columnist René Cuperus in the left-liberal daily De Volkskrant: "Dutch populism has now aligned itself with Europe's right-wing extremist movement. Why is the PVV taking this risk? … The PVV, Front National and Vlaams Belang are uniting with each other in their radical anti-European convictions to trigger a 'political earthquake' in Europe, as Geert Wilders put it. … It's bad news when the family of far-right parties channel all the citizens' disappointment with Europe, while mainstream politics tries to get the European project going to save the euro at all costs. This carries the threat of a brutal black-white polarisation in Europe."
