VW scandal harms Europe's credibility

The scandal over manipulated exhaust emissions tests will not just harm carmaker Volkswagen, the centre-left daily Le Monde fears: "This affair goes beyond Volkswagen. It tarnishes the image of the Europeans, who love to give lessons and pride themselves on doing all they can in the fight for environmental protection and against global warming. It tarnishes the credibility of the Europeans, who have never ceased to extol the superiority of their industrial norms in the negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Faced with public opinion that is sensitive to conspiracy theories and allergic to risk, it discredits the commitment of industry and science. This affair is far bigger than Volkswagen. Which makes it all the more inexcusable."
