Refugees put Croatia to the test

The construction of a fence on the border between Hungary and Serbia means that Croatia too will soon have to deal intensively with the issue of taking in refugees, the liberal daily Jutarnji list predicts: "Now the countries of Eastern Europe also face the challenges of taking in and integrating refugees. Countries that in the past were the origin rather than the destination of migrants in search of work or freedom. In these states the discussions about the impact of refugees have polarised society. Croatia won't be any exception here and may soon face new challenges. It won't be easy for the police, the asylum authorities or society, where a debate will develop about the number of immigrants and their impact on Croatia. The arrival of large numbers of asylum seekers will put the openness and solidarity of Croatian society to the test."
