Kiev sacrificing democracy in Donbass

Ukrainian government troops withdrew from the airport in Donetsk on Thursday. Despite this significant defeat the Ukrainian leadership still seems to believe in a military solution in Donbass, the Tages-Anzeiger comments and warns of serious consequences: "For Ukraine the consequences are far more catastrophic than for Russia. President Poroshenko has big plans for his country. Within two years he wants to be independent of Russian energy supplies, and a member of the EU within five. Ukraine runs the risk of sacrificing its democratic development for this conflict. Its last remaining economic resources are being gobbled up by the military and its Western creditors may suddenly find themselves in the unpleasant situation of financing a war. Kiev is in danger not just of losing territory but also of losing the hearts of the eastern Ukrainians at whose cost this battle is being fought."
