Ukrainian military fighting for attention

The fighting between Ukrainian government troops and pro-Russian separatists over control of Donetsk Airport has escalated in recent days. Kiev is trying to get back into the international spotlight by intensifying the conflict, the liberal-conservative daily Die Presse believes: "This roundabout way of thinking is setting the tone in Donbass. This is the only explanation for why the 'offers of peace' are coming as fast as the bullets fly, only to be rejected as unacceptable. Coming as it does just before the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels and after a week in which Europe was focussed on the threat of Islamist terror, the increased noise of battle in and around Donetsk is clearly a strategy. This is not about solving the conflict. It's a cynical attempt to attract the international attention which had waned once more."
