Ukraine needs money, not weapons

Fighting between separatists and the Ukrainian army escalated once more on the weekend. President Petro Poroshenko then announced uncompromising action against the rebels. The Christian-liberal daily Salzburger Nachrichten calls for more economic aid for the country: "There is no military solution so an economic solution is needed. Ukraine's economy is in a disastrous state. The top priority is comprehensive economic aid. And we're talking about more than 50 billion euros a year. Jobs are the best means to strengthen a country and improve people's situation there and they are the best weapon for depriving the rebels of their raison d'être. The handouts the country is currently receiving from the West are ineffective. ... An active economic policy would defuse the situation in the troubled areas of eastern Ukraine, calm the financial markets and secure prosperity. An economic Nato is needed, and the EU could fulfil that task."
