CIA report a triumph for liberal society

The US is under fire in the wake of the revelations about CIA torture practices but we shouldn't forget that the US Senate's report is also proof of a functioning democracy, the liberal-conservative daily Die Presse argues: "The example of the US demonstrates that democracy is not a state but a continuous process - with its dark sides and moments of glory. When liberal societies betray their values, freedom of opinion, equal and secret elections, and democratically adopted laws that override state authority ensure that the problem is remedied. In autocracies this doesn't work. Or can anyone imagine the Duma in Moscow presenting a report on the murders of journalists carried out by the Russian secret service or the National People's Congress in Beijing presenting one of the crimes of the People's Liberation Army?"
