US joins forces with a foe again

On the periphery of the nuclear negotiations in Vienna, representatives of the US and Iran have exchanged views on concerted action against Isil in Iraq. The US should think twice about such a cooperation, the conservative daily Lidové noviny writes: "If the ice between the US and Iran started to thaw, it would at least offer one positive development in a very unpleasant situation. Unfortunately the history of American strategies according to the motto 'My enemy's enemy is my friend' calls for caution. It was Washington (together with Paris) that held a protective hand over Saddam in the 1980s for fear that the Iranian revolution could spread. In Afghanistan the US supported the Mujahideen against the Soviet occupying forces. ... What effect would a new camaraderie with Tehran have? What would the Saudis think, Washington's most important partners in the region? Or the Israelis, for that matter?"
