MEPs too late with criticism of troika

A report by the Socialist MEP Alejandro Cercas decries the negative impact of the troika's activities. The report, which was approved by the Parliament on Thursday, also gives voice to the EU citizens' discontent. For the liberal daily To Ethnos the European Parliament's criticism comes far too late: "All that Cercas says is true. However the things he criticises have already been a problem for four years. So is the fact that the criticism comes three months before the European elections a ploy? Are the MEPs trying to curry favour with the angry citizens? The European elections threaten to turn into a protest vote against the EU. We shall see whether Europe's voters bury their heads in the sand again or finally react. The European Commission won't take the EU Parliament's report seriously, of that we can be pretty certain, because it simply isn't binding."
