Transfer power to the opposition

If it wants to save EU from total meltdown the EU must act as mediator to pave the way for President Viktor Yanukovych to step down without losing face, the liberal daily Mladá fronta Dnes argues: "Ukraine is close to suicide. It's high time to act. The only reason the army hasn't stepped in so far is that the government fears the consequences. At least this leaves a chance of reaching an agreement. At stake here is nothing less than the government transferring part of its powers to the opposition and holding early elections, including presidential elections. ... It is in the EU's interest, and also its duty, to mediate such an agreement. An agreement allowing the dignified capitulation of the current leadership, an agreement that holds the country together. The top priority now is to make sure we don't get news like that from Syria from the country behind Slovakia's eastern border."
