Only Putin and Obama can stop Assad

As the Syria peace talks got underway in Montreux on Wednesday, representatives of the Syrian government and opposition hurled accusations at each other. This holds out little hope for the conference, but only an agreement between the US and Russia can end the bloodshed anyway, the conservative daily El Mundo believes: "The conference couldn't have got off to a worse start. Just a few hours before it began, evidence that the regime has tortured thousands of opposition members was published. The horrifying photos overshadowed the start of the conference, leading both delegations to accuse each other of terrorism and highlighting the need for action to be taken against Bashar al-Assad. But the main problem is that the Syrian president enjoys Moscow's protection. So the key to ending the war lies less in the conference organised by the UN in Switzerland than in Moscow and Washington reaching an agreement."
