Assad's resignation not the goal of the talks

The peace talks can only bring about a solution for Syria  if the West grasps certain realities, Guy Mettan writes on his blog with the liberal daily Tribune de Genève: "For this small miracle to happen, several conditions must be fulfilled. The first is that the Western countries, first and foremost France and the US, must take off their blinkers and stop making unrealistic and unacceptable demands the precondition for any dialogue, like for example the unconditional surrender of Bashar al-Assad. The Westerners, who only speak of 'human rights' when they want to discredit their adversaries, should remember that the ultimate goal of this conference is not to get the Syrian dictator to pack his bags, but to bring about an end to the hostilities: a ceasefire - even a partial one - between the warring parties. When the house is burning you don't sue the owner, you put out the fire to save as many people as you can."
