EU must take in more refugees

To help the people of Syria the EU must not just boost its humanitarian aid but finally take in more refugees, the liberal business daily Jornal de Negócios demands: "Alleviating the suffering of the Syrian refugees and those driven out of the country is the only goal left for the ill-fated peace conference. ... The ongoing conflict will increase the number of refugees (currently 2.5 million) and pose growing difficulties for the main countries now taking them in, like Turkey. ... The EU must therefore drastically increase its willingness to take in Syrian refugees. At present it is only offering 12,350 refugees a place [until the end of 2014, under a scheme agreed with the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR] in just ten member states - with Germany as a special focus where they are considering granting permanent residency to 10,000 people."
