Stop the exploitation of labour migrants

The EU labour ministers agreed on Monday on stricter measures against the exploitation of labour migrants. A good start, the liberal daily De Volkskrant comments: "The fact is that our borders will now be opened to Romanians and Bulgarians, and above all the big cities must prepare for the arrival of new labour migrants. We know from experience that something like that won't succeed on its own. In the construction, cleaning and cargo sectors, for example, there have been many problems with ill-intentioned temping agencies, deceitful employers and profit-greedy landlords. An unexpected and unwelcome impact of the free movement of labour. ... Now the ministers have reacted with a European action plan meant to fight underpayment and exploitation across borders. This looks like a serious first step in the right direction."
