The decisive battle over the truth

If the rebels' accusations against Assad prove correct, the civil war in Syria will have escalated to a new level, the liberal-conservative daily Diário de Notícias points out: "If these claims and the death toll are verified - it should be noted that the NGOs close to the opposition talk of 'toxic gas' but not of chemical weapons - then the Assad regime has overstepped a moral boundary that has seldom been transgressed since the end of World War II. ... The Assad regime would also have shown once and for all that it will stop at nothing to ensure its own survival. But should these accusations prove false, as far as basic principles are concerned the Syrian opposition will have lost a battle at least as important as that which it is losing against Assad's forces and their allies from Lebanon's Hezbollah on the field."
