Only a US military deployment can help

Whether or not the many dead in Syria are victims of a toxic gas attack by the Assad regime, the US must finally intervene, the liberal daily Dagens Nyheter urges: "US President Barack Obama announced a year ago that there is a line that may not be overstepped. In March he sharpened his tone. ... But although that line was crossed nothing happened until June, when Obama decided to deliver weapons to certain Syrian rebels. ... If it was in fact a mass murder using poisonous gas, the question 'What is to be done?' is even more pressing. The only thing that can really stop this civil war is large-scale military intervention by the US, or in other words another intervention in an Arab country with the risk of it turning into an even bigger fiasco than Iraq. The tragedy in Syria is becoming increasingly inconceivable. But a simple solution is nowhere in sight."
