Poland doesn't need German TV war film

Poland's public television broadcaster TVP1 will show the German miniseries Generation War this June. The film deals with World War II and is controversial in Poland because it portrays Polish partisan fighters as anti-Semites. Polish society should make up its own mind about the series, the broadcaster has argued. The Germany expert at the liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza, Bartosz T. Wieliński, will hear nothing of such justifications: "The film is simply weak. The producers may have presented it as some sort of epoch-making film, but in fact it's not even up to the quality of most historical family films. ... The plot is banal, the characters one-dimensional, and the tragic story line is just a backdrop for isolated stories about love and family. I saw this series and wondered why German television has been showing run-of-the-mill stuff like this for years on end, when such international masterpieces have been filmed about the Second World War."
