Hollande won't give up on same-sex marriage

Hundreds of thousands of protesters demonstrated in Paris on Sunday against the Socialist government's plans to introduce same-sex marriage. The regional paper La République des Pyrennées nevertheless believes the protests won't deter the government from its plans: "The images and the slogans were so powerful that the defenders of the family got the most media attention over the weekend. ... Of course one shouldn't play down the sincere resistance of part of the population to a reform that recognises the demand for equality and the legal recognition of same-sex parents. But it's an illusion to believe that the Élysée will drop the draft law, even if it was nice enough to call the demonstration 'impressive'. After all, even more people protested against the Sarkozy-Fillon government's pension reform. But that didn't make the government budge an inch, assured as it was of a majority in parliament."
