A true chance after 65 years of conflict

UN recognition of Palestine could serve to jump-start the interrupted peace process, the liberal daily La Vanguardia hopes, recalling the splitting up of the region 65 years ago: "The recognition of Palestine should also provide yet another opportunity for the Israelis and the Palestinians to resume the peace negotiations that have been stalled for months. But this won't be accomplished so quickly, because early elections are slated for January 22 in Israel. ... The decision adopted by the General Assembly today brings to mind an equally historical date. It was on November 29th,1947, that the United Nations voted on favour of a Jewish state and an Arab state. Sixty-five years later the conflict continues unresolved."
