Hamas the winner of the ceasefire

The ceasefire negotiated between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas group by Egypt and the US was for the most part adhered to on Thursday. Above all Hamas benefits from the agreement, the left-liberal daily Der Standard notes: "Surprisingly the winner here is Hamas. The ceasefire worked out by the Egyptians deals not only with Israel's desire for an end to the bombardment but also with the needs of the people in the Gaza Strip. This means the blockade has indirectly been defined as a cause of the conflict. The new Egyptian leadership has thus ensured that the ceasefire at least comes across as a ceasefire in a conflict between parties of equal standing. This reflects the changed political situation in the region in which the post-colonial regimes are gradually being replaced by elected governments where - at least for now - the Islamic parties play the leading role."
