Clinton gets her way in Gaza conflict

After eight days of intense fighting Israel and Hamas agreed on a ceasefire on Wednesday. This is above all thanks to the efforts of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the left-liberal daily La Repubblica notes with admiration: "Hillary Clinton didn't confine herself to giving her blessing to the ceasefire agreement, which had already practically been decided. She put her seal of power on it, guaranteeing Egypt billions in aid and improving Israel's battered reputation in the West. Without it there would never be even a scrap of hope for a Palestinian state. ... Hillary Clinton will tolerate no excuses. ... Not a few had hoped to find a weak point in America's stance. In vain. And everyone followed the tough line of the First Lady of diplomacy - perhaps also bearing in mind that it would not be a good idea to contradict the woman they may face in four years' time not as secretary of state, but as president of the United States."
