Egypt must prove itself in Gaza conflict

The military confrontations between Israel and the Gaza Strip continued unabated on Monday. The liberal daily Dagens Nyheter hopes Egypt will take on a mediating role: "Hamas is hoping for support especially from neighbouring Egypt, where the Muslim Brothers have become the major political force since the fall of the dictatorship. Islamist President Mohammed Mursi must heed pro-Palestinian public opinion. However neither he nor the country can afford open conflict with Israel and by extension the US. Egypt is dependent on military help from the US and economic aid from the West. Calling into question the peace agreement with Israel would be extremely risky. This means Gaza will put to the test Mursi's ability to play a positive and leading role in the region. Egypt should do everything possible to mediate a truce."
