Israel has no good options

The EU foreign ministers jointly demanded a swift ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip on Monday. Several ministers strongly criticised the militant Palestinian organisation and called on it to immediately end its shelling of Israel. The liberal daily Sme stresses that all the options open to Israel in reacting to the bombardment are bad: "Destroying Hamas' rocket launchers without civilian deaths would be great, but it is not possible in densely populated Gaza. Not even if Hamas didn't deliberately store its weapons where attacks are bound to result in civilian casualities. Israel is caught in a trap. It has to do something. ... Hamas can sacrifice far more innocent victims without losing its power. In its propaganda war against Israel it even welcomes these sacrifices."
