Europe's conservatives can inspire Romania

The European People's Party (EPP) will convene for a two-day congress in Bucharest on Wednesday to decide its political course for the coming ten years. A good 1,200 participants from 40 countries are expected to attend, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso. The conservative daily Romania Libera hopes there will be clear signals for Romania: "The EPP's congress will be successful if its most prominent participants manage to restore Romania's trust in Europe. Above and beyond the usual speeches, Europe's leaders should present concrete examples to help the country understand precisely what advantages Europe offers. Banal examples like freedom of movement are not enough. ... And not least Europe's politicians could do Romanian democracy a true favour by giving the conservative opposition alliance the ARD [Right Romania Alliance] a few good tips on how to become a force to be reckoned with in the parliamentary election [on December 9]."
