Only US can ensure peace and order in the Balkans

20 years after the Dayton Agreement and the end of the war in the former Yugoslavia the presence of the US in the Balkans is still indispensable, the liberal daily Jutarnji list comments: "The fight against terrorism is a US priority, and so it will remain in this territory to prevent some countries in the region from becoming failed states and a hotbed for extremist groups. Here the US plays a more important role than the EU. That's because often it can act quicker and exert a greater influence on the political structures in the region than the EU, which is generally hesitant or makes political calculations because there is a lack of consensus in Brussels. ... The fact is, however, that the US has nothing against the EU playing a bigger role in the region. In fact that's just what it wants. ... The best thing would be to combine European experience with American resolve and political power."
