Exodus to Europe: Denmark's schizophrenic asylum policy

Denmark plans to introduce further restrictions on family reunification and benefits for refugees. It's high time the country agreed to go along with a joint European asylum policy, the centre-left daily Politiken urges: "The government on the one hand stresses the need for joint action but on the other hand reiterates that Denmark won't commit to any obligations even if it serves our national interests to do so. There can be no doubt that swift action is needed to stop the exodus to Europe through common rules and improved border surveillance. … When Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen meets the EU leaders he will have to defend Denmark's schizophrenic asylum policy: we support a European solution but don't want to be part of it. … It's time to change course."
