Sakharov Prize for Badawi just the first step

The EU Parliament awarded the Sakharov Prize to Saudi Arabian blogger Raif Badawi on Thursday. Badawi was sentenced in 2014 to ten years in prison and 1,000 lashes. The liberal news magazine Newsweek Polska welcomes the decision to give Sakharov the prize: "At least for a brief moment this news will draw the world's attention to human rights violations in Saudi Arabia. For the past 70 years the Saudi kingdom has been an ally of the Western world in the Middle East. That's why the West turns a blind eye to the regime's cruelty and medieval legal practices. ... Now it's time for the next step. The EU heads of government, EU Council President Tusk, US President Obama and the new Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau must put pressure on the Saudi king to free Badawi and let him emigrate to Canada where his wife and three children are waiting for him."
