Exodus to Europe: Denmark's refugee dilemma

Denmark stopped all train traffic from and to Germany on Wednesday after hundreds of refugees entered the country hoping to make it as far as Sweden. That will put the Danish government in a dilemma when the EU interior and justice ministers meet on Monday to discuss the refugee crisis, the left-liberal daily Politiken comments: "On the one hand the events of the past few days have forced the government to see that the countries of Europe cannot solve the refugee crisis on their own, and that we need a European solution. On the other hand if refugees are redistributed according to binding asylum regulations it looks like our hand is being forced. The government is trying to distance itself as much as possible from European cooperation on asylum. Not least because it and others who support Denmark's legal exemptions [which grant Denmark exemptions from certain EU policy areas] now want to avoid any debate on whether Denmark should participate in Europol and cross-border criminal investigations."
