The gang of criminals in Bucharest's town hall

Romania's anti-corruption agency arrested the mayor of Bucharest Sorin Oprescu on the weekend. He is suspected of taking bribes from companies in exchange for public contracts. The news portal Ziare expresses dismay at the results of the investigation: "According to the public prosecutor the city administration can be described as nothing short of an organised crime gang. It was active between 2013 and 2015 and governed corruption through precise rules and with fixed percentages. … This was the way it went: the mayor never had to meet the people paying the bribes. He had people to collect the money for him. They kept one percent for themselves and then passed it on all the way to the mayor who received ten percent of each contract. … If such gangs aren't completely dismantled they can simply reassemble. … They are like a boil that, unless it's drained out, goes on producing pus."
