Enough of cheap meat in the Netherlands

The animal protection initiative Wakker Dier has declared war on cheap meat and called for a boycott of it in the supermarkets. But the responsibility does not lie with the supermarkets alone, warns the centre-left daily De Volkskrant: "Not only because of animal rights but also for environmental reasons, the Netherlands must gradually move away from mass-produced meat and towards organic and ecologically viable meat production. This involves everyone: farmers, supermarkets, consumers and exporters. We must eat less but better meat. … This approach calls for politicians to step in, and this goes for all political parties. The issues of animal protection and economically-sustainable agriculture are too important for them to be left to Wakker Dier or the Party for the Animals [which has 2 seats in parliament]."
