Democratic states avoiding Olympics

After the IOC decision that Beijing should host the Winter Olympics 2022 the liberal-conservative daily Die Presse complains about the lack of bids from democratic countries: "Host locations obviously need to fulfill two criteria in order to get the games. First they need either a dictatorship or an authoritarian regime. Second, it helps if the bid involves as little respect for the environment and national subjects as possible. So Beijing basically had the 2022 Winter Olympics in the bag. ... But it is also clear that ever fewer real winter sports regions are bidding. Particularly in Europa - recently in Munich - where the population vehemently protested against any kind of investment or structural developments. Winter games like those recently held in Innsbruck or Lillehammer seem almost impossible these days. If the world wants politically correct Olympic games a lot more democratic and ecological model countries will have to make genuine bids."
