Danish government bowing to xenophobics

Denmark's liberal minority government, which is supported by the right-wing Danish People's Party, wants to publish articles in foreign newspapers informing about planned cuts in benefits for refugees. The declared goal is to deter migrants from travelling to Denmark to apply for asylum. An embarrassing campaign, the centre-left daily Politiken comments: "It's hardly likely that people who are fleeing war, persecution and desperation will sit down and read the paper. In fact it's far more likely that they won't ever notice these wonderful ads. … But what is certain is that others will read the government's message to the world around us and see it as proof of something they have long feared: namely that the liberal government is bowing to right-wing populist forces."
