Hiring and firing at ING Bank

ING Bank has announced plans to terminate its contracts with a large number of subcontracted workers and independent companies before July 1 to avoid employment termination payments that would be due owing to new legislation. The left-liberal daily De Volkskrant finds this approach reprehensible: "ING is also violating the intention of the social partners in their agreement with the government here. In the agreement the employers undertake to improve the rights of flexible employees. Particularly when it comes to a bank like ING - which is already under close public scrutiny - one can expect upright and responsible conduct. Companies like ING should be clever and behave well in the coming months rather than using tricks to try and sidestep the laws. Honesty will also stand the company in good stead. Because a loyal workforce and satisfied customers are worth more in the end than a few thousand euros in employment termination payments."
