Netherlands must stop gas extraction

The Dutch province of Groningen has experienced repeated earthquakes as a result of natural gas extraction. After the most recent tremors, the Dutch governing coalition is in conflict over the future of gas production. The sooner the Netherlands stops gas extraction the better, the liberal daily NRC Handelsblad writes: "For now the financial consequences are still manageable. But they will be grave as soon as the resources in Groningen no longer make up the bulk of our energy production and only supplement the fuel that has to be imported. ... Such imports will above all come from Russia and have far-reaching geopolitical consequences. ... Above all we must search assiduously for alternative energy sources and improve the efficiency of current production. Because sooner or later there will be an end to gas production in the Netherlands."
