Orthodox priests are Ponta's best campaigners

The recording of a speech by a district party leader of the Romanian Social Democrats (PS) published on Monday on the website of the daily Gândul reveals that Orthodox priests have been pushing their congregations to vote for Victor Ponta in Sunday's second round of the presidential election. The Romanian service of the German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle is not at all surprised: "This man's verbal delirium is not restricted to the elections but also stands for a reality we've all been aware of for years. Without wanting to generalise, many priests are now losing the respect of their congregations because of wheeling and dealing with politicians who help them become prosperous. The PSD district party leader is now threatening that if Ponta loses he'll have all women who are married to priests fired. Some of them work in the public sector - precisely because their husbands have good relations with politicians."
