EU must stand up to conservative US

The Republicans' victory in the US midterm elections means they effectively co-govern the country, the state-run daily Wiener Zeitung comments, and appeals to Europe to raise its profile vis-à-vis the US: "With the strengthening of the radical market forces in the US, the TTIP free trade agreement is likely to take on a new character. Moreover we can expect a tougher choice of words against Russia. The fact that the Republicans are now effectively a ruling party faces Europe with a considerable challenge. Jean-Claude Juncker, who also made his first official appearance in Brussels yesterday, made it clear that the Commission is made up of politicians, not bureaucrats. The EU must raise its profile in foreign policy and position itself independently. The EU can have no interest in a cold war. The changes of 25 years ago were far too valuable for that."
