Even EU Commissioners need prep time

The future EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has approved the Slovenian Violeta Bulc as his candidate for transportation commissioner. Her hearing by the MEPs is scheduled for Monday. The left-liberal daily Delo wonders whether there is any point to a hearing considering the enormous time pressure: "The hastily organised hearing of Violeta Bulc, which is to take place in just four days' time in Strasbourg, diminishes the importance of such hearings. Can a hearing really serve a serious purpose when the candidate has to familiarise herself with the subject matter basically overnight? Violeta Bulc has never had anything to do with the transportation policy area in which she is now to occupy a top EU post. In these difficult times for Europe the urge to confirm the new EU Commission as quickly as possible, no matter what the cost, is understandable. But if any means justify the end, ultimately it's the reputation of the European Parliament that will suffer."
