Freedom is passé in Orbán's Hungary

The Hungarian police carried out a raid on the government-critical NGO Ökotárs on Monday, prompted by suspicions of embezzlement and illegal financial activities. This is the end of freedom in Hungary, philosopher Gáspár Miklós Tamás writes angrily in the liberal weekly paper Heti Világgazdaság: "Elements of civil society like the opposition parties and unions have already lost all relevance. The freedom of the press is being massively curtailed. There are innumerable politically-motivated dismissals in the state apparatus. Independent state institutions are increasingly losing their influence. The education sector is being destroyed. Conformism and subservience are everywhere. An anti-modern, nationalist world view is being foisted upon the schools and state media. And now it's the turn of the helpless NGOs. ... Hungary has lost its freedom."
