West prefers to commemorate past genocides

Despite the acute risk of genocide the Yazidi minority in Iraq is facing, the Western world prefers to commemorate the genocides of the past, the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera complains: "Given the striking resemblance between the pictures of the past and those of the present it is alarming to see how long it has taken the governments and people of the Western states to realise what is happening in Iraq. ... The European governments are now pondering how they can help the Iraqi people under threat from the Islamic terrorists. But this is happening without any real guidance of public opinion that could focus attention on the genocide taking place before their eyes rather than the genocides of the past. If we're not able to help thousands of people trying to escape, who remind us of the darkest chapter in European history, how can we continue to commemorate the crimes of the 20th century and talk of the duty of remembrance?"
