Europe achieves new unity

The EU's sanctions are a sign of new unity in Europe, the liberal-conservative Neue Zürcher Zeitung comments: "Although certain deviants like Switzerland are standing aside and put their direct economic interests above the long-term consequences for Europe's security, this continent is for once speaking with one voice. This is a true turning point because Russia was one of those issues on which the EU states could never agree. Vladimir Putin gambled for high stakes, only to emerge from the entangled situation in eastern Ukraine if not as the loser, then certainly not as the clear winner. The government in Kiev is consolidating its power, its troops are advancing, the rebel area is shrinking. Instead of seeking a course of de-escalation Putin is increasingly isolating himself. His agricultural sanctions are a hopeless gesture of defiance."
