An accident just waiting to happen

The mining disaster in Soma could have been anticipated and avoided, the conservative daily Milliyed believes: "Death announced its coming with pipes and drums in Soma. The idea of a parliamentary committee of inquiry was rejected [two weeks ago by the governing AKP]. 'We know what's best,' they said. This is neither capitalism nor development. If a word must be found for it, it is clearly a crime. One that makes the problem of democracy in this country abundantly clear. The value given to human life in a country corresponds to that country's democratic maturity. ... In a country where human life is worth so little, the fight for democracy is also fraught with setbacks. We want a country in which human life is valued, and democratic standards are high."
