EU responsible for crisis in Macedonia

The ruling National Conservatives in Macedonia have won a majority in the parliamentary elections, meaning that their candidate will remain president. But the opposition is accusing the government of electoral fraud. The left-liberal daily Der Standard holds the EU responsible for this domestic crisis: "Ever since 2006 all the EU member states have left Macedonia in the lurch. The country attained EU candidate status in 2005, but no one has seen to it that the veto issued by the Greeks because of the childish row over names is 'disposed of' politically. ... The non-existent friends in the EU are partially responsible for the fact that Macedonia is now ruled by people with a 19th century mentality, that hundreds of thousands are leaving and that a narrow-minded and provincial outlook prevails. Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski opted for nationalist populism also because he saw no chance of getting into Europe. Now he is winning elections with this course."
