Stand firm on joint economic sanctions

Moscow's threats to react with economic reprisals should not stop the EU and the US from imposing sanctions on Russia, the conservative daily The Times believes: "Finally, the West should gird itself for economic counter-action from Moscow. Chancellor Merkel has offered to divert gas in German storage to Ukraine should Mr Putin turn off the supply from Russia. Many EU countries are also vulnerable to gas blackmail, including Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia. The EU must draw up contingency plans, and the US has to review its restrictions on exporting energy to its European allies. Sanctions against such a powerful trading partner will never be without cost for the West. Now, though, is a moment to show resolve. Mr Putin is not as strong as he would have us believe."
