European elections: winner must become Commission president

Since last Friday we know the names of the candidates of the three major European Parliament parties for the top post in the European elections. The winner of the election should automatically become President of the European Commission, the liberal daily NRC Handelsblad argues: "The Treaty of Lisbon deliberately leaves room for interpretation so that the appointment of the Commission president could ultimately be 'something that the bosses decide'. ... So it's good that most parties give the text a broad interpretation and have designated their candidates for the Commission presidency. ... It's an attempt to make the European elections more personalised. ... It's a step on the path towards the urgently needed politicisation of the EU. Now the heads of government must take the work already done by the major political parties in the European Parliament seriously and acknowledge the leading and decisive role of the Parliament before the elections actually take place."
