IOC and Fifa the gravediggers of sport

The Olympic Winter Games in the Russian city of Sochi in 2014 and the Fifa World Cup in 2022 in the Gulf Emirate of Qatar have robbed international sporting events of their true meaning, the state-run liberal daily Wiener Zeitung writes: "The International Football Federation Fifa and the International Olympic Committee look like gravediggers with shovels in their hands. Blinded and spoiled by big money, these well-dressed (and mostly) elderly men applaud these gigantic plans. ... And until now the international understanding has looked like this: hundreds of guest workers, above all from Asia, have died on the construction sites in both locations owing to the dreadful working conditions. ... Athletes who take part in the competitions in Sochi and Qatar may have good intentions. But such monstrosities have long been stripped of any meaning. The only message they send out is the bitter knowledge that money and power - in the intimate circles of Fifa and the IOC - are unscrupulous and always win out in the end. As opposed to most of the athletes who will compete there."
