Democrats the losers in Egypt

Over 50 people died on Sunday in Egypt during street clashes between supporters of the deposed president Mohammed Morsi, his opponents and the army. Peace continues to elude the country, the liberal daily Dagens Nyheter laments: "One can - and should - accuse Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood of numerous mistakes and democratic deficits. But that's just how democracy works. If the soldiers had remained in their barracks, the people could have voted the Islamists out of office. Now there's a high risk that the vicious circle of mob rule and military violence will be perpetuated. ... The big losers are all the democrats and human rights activists who want an Egypt that is ruled neither by generals nor by fundamentalists. They've always faced an uphill struggle but the Arab Spring gave them hope. Now they are once again caught between the lines."
